Did I hear anyone say “NDA”?Ī release date for The Ancient Gods, Part One has not yet been announced, however, the teaser revealed that a full trailer with more info can be expected to drop at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 27th at 2 PM ET. As Martin pointed out at the trailer premiere, “Your rampage of destruction saved humanity from extinction, but it came at a cost.” What cost could he be referring to? Martin even teased that we’ll eventually get the chance to meet the person who “runs Hell,” making his co-presenters visibly sweat. Executive producer Marty Stratton and game director Hugo Martin of id Software also mentioned future DLC to come, saying “We ain’t seen nothing yet,” in one of their QuakeCon panels on August 7th. The teaser prominently shows a Tyrant demon with blue glowing eyes showing off his “guns” on Urdak accompanied by what we assume to be Vega’s voice warning: “You are here to restore order to my world, but with the demons in control, you understand the threat they pose to all my creations.” A palpable sense of foreboding ensues, and we’re certain the Doom Slayer is about to run out of chewing gum yet again.īut that’s not all. We also caught a glimpse of Urdak, the Heaven realm in DOOM Eternal, which seemingly has been taken over by demons. One of the new locations shown is what looks like an immense oil platform rising above a stormy sea. While the teaser is relatively short, we can already see that this first DLC will continue the Doom Slayer’s journey where DOOM Eternal‘s campaign ended, showing off arenas spanning from the heavenly hallowed to hellishly horrifying. Judging from the story and gameplay hinted at in the teaser, it looks like we can expect more mayhem and hellish carnage from this DLC, with plenty of Demons being torn into and ripped apart. Heaven has done right by id's art department. At this year’s QuakeCon, Bethesda showed off the first teaser trailer for The Ancient Gods, Part One, the first story DLC for their massive FPS hit DOOM Eternal, which released earlier this year. It's hard to complain that Doom has plot when it results in environments like The Holt, where digital plant life blooms against the backdrop of a bloodsoaked forest where, if you chip away at the bark of the trees, it reveals gold beneath. ![]() There's even some meta-comedy, courtesy of a UAC intern who has a direct view of your HUD and its revelations. This is no side story, delivering critical blows to major characters from the past half-a-decade of Doom, while artfully consolidating new additions to keep things simple. Experience the ultimate combination of speed and power as you battle your way across dimensions with the next leap in push-forward, first-person. Unbowed by the naysayers who objected to jumping sequences and lore, it's pushed forward with both. Become the Slayer in an epic single-player campaign to conquer demons across dimensions and stop the final destruction of humanity. If both the imps and the Slayer are quaking, pun intended, the only truly fearless party involved in The Ancient Gods is id Software. It now triggers the strongest muscle memory, and its patterns are so predictable they're almost comforting in a storm. Ironically, only the Marauder provides the closest thing to a break-despite its first appearance triggering an involuntary, out-loud "oh no". The truth is that The Ancient Gods regularly frightened me with its intensity. There were moments, after several minutes in the mosh pit, where the appearance of a chainsaw-endowed Doom Slayer or two towering Tyrants or three Barons of Hell left me buckling emotionally, not knowing how I'd keep up the act that I was the Slayer, the only thing the demons fear. If there's little respite outside combat, you certainly won't find any in the centrepiece battles, where id holds an occult candle to your arse until your pants start to singe. The membrane between Doom's fight and exploration phases is weakening.Īs a consequence, The Ancient Gods is Doom at its most oppressive and intimidating. ![]() And remember those annoying tentacles in Doom Eternal? Their gigantic sister lives here, and she heard what you said. ![]() The rising fog hurts, too, pushing you to keep pace in a Prince of Persia-style platforming puzzle. They bulge as you pass, and blister with a roar if you hang about, causing damage. Defeat Samur in the Holt (Ancient Gods 1) Lucky Charm Bracelet. Destroy the Life Sphere in the Blood Swamps (Ancient Gods 1) Regime Change. Complete the UAC Atlantica Facility (Ancient Gods 1) To Take a Life Sphere. In the festering Blood Swamps, battered by acid rain, pustules rise from the sodden earth. Doing so will net you the majority of the DLC's trophies: Torrential Pain. While huge arena fights still provide the punctuation of each level, new threats conspire to push you through the intervening corridors. The Turret is a sign that the membrane between Doom's fight and exploration phases is weakening.
